Well, a combination of issues caused the switch to be flipped to the new server and new web site. Thus, this is the last post to the PostNuke software that performed well for quite a few years.
If you're reading this, that means your DNS has not propagated to point to the new site. Don't worry about that -- it'll happen soon.

Sometime soon the software that runs the debianHELP web site will be changed. This will be, in effect, creating a new web site.
It's often said that change is a love/hate thing, with both good and bad points.
The site has only had one serious change in the 6 years it's been online: Years ago I migrated the site to a more forum-based focus and that's worked out pretty well.
But soon there will be some equally serious conceptual changes aimed at providing users an easier and more flexible way of solving problems, getting questions answered and in finding information. With that change will come some new features and tools. Needless to say I'm psyched about the change and what we can do with it.
The exact timing of the change is still to be determined, but it's close. If you're only an occasional visitor don't be surprised if you connect to the site one day and it looks quite different and you have to create a new account.

To help organize things a bit, 2 new forums were created for folks having problems specific to non-PC hardware.
There now are forums for the Apple Macintosh and Sun SPARC architectures.

Just a quick word of warning that some physical work on the server will be done Friday, 24 March. The total downtime will be fairly significant -- about 3 hours. So don't be too worried if/when your browser reports it cannot connect to the site.
Update: Back up and online with no problems. Forget you ever read this. Nothing to see here, move along...

debianHELP.org has added a new hostname wiki.debianhelp.org. This site is running PmWiki and is intended to host various "mini How-Tos", tutorials, and miscellaneous documentation. www.debianHELP.org had this function previously, and the data from our old wiki is being moved to the new wiki.debianhelp.org site (a painful process, since there seems to be no "standard" wiki markup language).
If you're interested in creating and/or editing pages in the wiki, you must read the notice in the Wiki Work Forum since there is an edit/create page password to hopefully deter spammers from filling the wiki with rubbish.
On a different note, there now exists an RSS feed for the most recent Forum postings. Feel free to use that link, but please don't hammer that feed too often -- things don't change that much around here. :-)

Friday nights (east coast US time) are one of our slowest periods of the week. So this is a good time to note that the site will go down tonight for some maintenance. I'll put up the "busy" page but don't be surprised if you don't get the normal site.
The work is not extensive so I only expect an hour or two (probably less) of actual downtime.
Update: Well, the actual maintenance was postponed until Sunday, Oct. 2nd. But it went semi-smoothly. During the day today (the 2nd) there will be some minor tweaking going on, but the site was only down about 15 minutes. Just don't be surprised if you get a 30-second-long "wow, what was that" episode occasionally. :-)

What, you thought we had changed from supporting Debian to Spreading the Word?! :-)
As you may have noticed yesterday and this morning, we had some unexpected DNS issues. For a while the site resolved to a web site dedicated towards "spreading the word". No proselytizing intended, just a fluke with DNS.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled GNU/Linux support...
Update: To burn just a little more space on the front page, with the recent site renovation the translation box to the left was deleted. In its place, you'll now see a link under "Tools and Toys" of "Translate This Page". Hitting that link will prompt you to translate the present page you're looking at into any one of over 40 languages. While any auto-translation has its problems, it's hoped that this will be of use to users whose native language is not English.

I'm sorry to announce that today I changed the site's security: You now have to have a user account in order to post articles.
From 2000, when I first started the site, I've been pleased that the site was non-commercial and wide-open. But things change.
I've had many complaints about spam posts in the site. I didn't think there was much of a problem, but after another complaint today, I did some serious searches to look at the issue. What I found was literally thousands and thousands of spam posts. There is spam for everything under the sun -- porn, casinos, sex aids, cars, impotence "cures", cartoons, other web sites, you name it.
Sorry, but over the years I've put a good amount of work into the site. I'm simply not going to sit back and let some fool(s) fill the site with garbage.
This will be an inconvenience to some people, I know. I'm sorry about that, but the above statement goes. The site is able to be read and searched by anyone. But to post, you need to create an account. This is a simple process and, believe me, I don't spam people or give/sell anyone's information. But if you would like to post, you'll need to create an account.

The site is going to be down for maintenance later this afternoon/evening (starting around 22:00 UTC or thereabouts). I'll put the "we're busy" home page up, so don't be surprised if you see it or don't get a connection to the site.
Update (x3): Okay, that was semi-painless and was pretty short. The entire system has been swapped out. Despite the site being back up and running, don't be fooled -- major changes are still being undertaken.
If you notice anything weird, please ignore it for 24 hours or so; like I said, changes are still being done. However, if it's really annoying, or if something's still broken after 24 hours, then please leave me some Feedback.

Over the next week or so I'll be doing some system upgrades and long-overdue maintenance. Don't be surprised if you link in and find our "doing maintenance" web page notice rather than the usual site. Thanks in advance for your patience.
