hello,

I use debian lenny 506 and I have two problems:
firstly, when I try to install snmp (with apt-get install snmp) I get the message that some packages will be downloaded and installed, but after installing there is no snmp.conf file on the disk
secondly, I think it is a problem with the snmpd.conf file, I can´t get access with snmpwalk to oids like this .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.10.1.5.1
(snmpwalk -v 2c -c public localhost .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021 ...)
I get the message no more variables left in this mib view (it is past the end of the mib tree)

has someone a idea to solve the problems?

kind regards

Unlike virt-manager, virt-install is a command line tool that allows you to create KVM guests on a headless server. You may ask yourself: "But I can use vmbuilder to do this, why do I need virt-install?" The difference between virt-install and vmbuilder is that vmbuilder is for creating Ubuntu-based guests, whereas virt-install lets you install all kinds of operating systems (e.g. Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD) and distributions in a guest, just like virt-manager. This article shows how you can use it on an Ubuntu 10.10 KVM server.

Hello All,

I did a Kernel upgrade and the network card no longer seem to work reliable or all. There was mention of rename device during the upgrade. Any ideas?

Is there any problem mixing FakeRAID and Linux software RAID on the same pair of disks?

I have a desktop with 2 SSDs, one for a Windows 7 system drive and the other intended for a Squeeze system drive. I also have a matched pair of HDDs that are set up in the BIOS as a RAID 1 array of about half the capacity of the HDDs. That RAID partition is used by Windows for user data. I want to use most of the rest of the HDD capacity for a RAID 1 array for Squeeze to use for log and user data, but also have 1 small partition on each of the HDDs to use for swap. My BIOS will let me set up a second RAID 1 array, but only if it uses all of the remaining capacity of the HDDs, so I would have to do without swap or put it on the RAID, or on the SSD.

Hi
I am new to debian although I have been using and enjoying mepis for about 3 years now. It is now time to try debian so I dl ed the latest version and popped it into the drive of my mepis only desktop expecting a livecd boot as is so common but it booted to an install menu and then after selecting expert (not because I am, but because it tends to give more control) I was faced with another menu, I decided it would be better to ask for some help rather than bork my system.

Updated Debian GNU/Linux: 5.0.7 released

The Debian project is pleased to announce the seventh update of its stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (codename "lenny"). This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustment to serious problems.

Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away 5.0 CDs or DVDs but only to update via an up-to-date Debian mirror after an installation, to cause any out of date packages to be updated.

Hello,

I just switched to the last debian testing, and I'm having problems with reading an USB external drive. Namely, I can not access it as user, but I can as root. Moreover, the computer does not boot with the drive plugged in. I tried to change ownership to my user and when i plug in the device .. Debian crashes and have to restart by button!

After googling, I guess this could be a DeviceKit or PolicyKit issue, but I'm not sure since I am not a very experienced user. I'm running Debian testing 64bit with KDE.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This guide explains how you can install and use KVM for creating and running virtual machines on an Ubuntu 10.10 server. I will show how to create image-based virtual machines and also virtual machines that use a logical volume (LVM). KVM is short for Kernel-based Virtual Machine and makes use of hardware virtualization, i.e., you need a CPU that supports hardware virtualization, e.g. Intel VT or AMD-V.

I was trying to install Debian Lenny on IBM x3650 M3
I have an onboard Broadcom NIC and an additional Intel NIC, both dualport.
I can see both the nics in the lspci, but when i do ifconfig, I only see 2 interfaces as opposed to 4.

Please find the outputs of lspci and ifconfig attached:

Hi.

When MPD is playing audio, I cannot play audio in another app (ie Totem/VLC). I have worked Google quite a bit, but I have not found a solution.

MPD runs as the mpd user. Alsa config is default (as far as I can tell, it configures itself automatically now). System is squeeze/testing, up to date.

In previous Ubuntu versions, there was a Google Earth .deb package available in the Medibuntu repository; unfortunately there is no such package for Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). While it is possible to install the Google Earth package for Ubuntu 10.04 on Ubuntu 10.10, there is another way of installing Google Earth on Ubuntu 10.10. The method described in this tutorial will create a Google Earth .deb package for Ubuntu 10.10 from which Google Earth can be installed.

Hi,

I used to have a dual boot system... Installed Debian as dual boot on a Windows box... I have now removed Windows, and am only Debian...

Windows was on /dev/sda1, Debian is on /dev/sdb1. I am still booting off sda1, then grub takes over and starts linux on sdb1. I want to boot from sdb1, removing my sda1 from the boot mix... Can someone point me at something covering this? A url, tutorial etc?

Thanks,
Dave

I am a newbie on linux so plz bear with me as well as for my broken english.

I try to connect two USB card readers to my Debain Squeeze AMD 64 but they dont show up as ttyUSB under dev. When I do a tail -f messages I can see that the device connects for a sec and then disconnects again. See attached file. Can anyone point in a direction where I can find a solution to this? Grateful for any help.

Let me clarify

I use NVIDIA's non free drivers cuz I need them in order to have CUDA working. I haven't been able to do so otherwise.
Now every time I do an update in apt-get something (not sure what) gets broken. So far I have managed to resolve this by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the nvidia drivers.
However this is starting to get annoying. I was under the impression that it was an Xorg - xserver update which crippled the installation, but after going through the last update, I saw no update about it. I know for a fact that nvidia drivers are loaded, yet X is complaining that nvidia-glx could not be found. Apt-get was complaining about nvidia-vpau, nvidia-alternatives and a /usr/lib/nvidia/diversions/libGL.so & libGL.so.1 overwriting some other libraries.

This is my goal:

WAN (USB 3G Wireless Modem)
             |
             |
Netbook (acting as router, running Squeeze)
   |                   |
built-in            built-in
ath9k wlan0         r8169 eth0
in ap mode             |
   |                   |
   |                   |
various               LAN
wireless
clients

The wireless clients and the LAN nodes don't need to talk to each other, but it would be nice if they acted as if they were on the same LAN. Both the wireless clients and LAN nodes need to access the internet. The netbook needs to do NAT/firewall/DHCP/DNS Proxy/QOS for both the LAN and the wireless clients.

Hi

Would be really appreciated for your help.

I'm a Debian testing user (not an experienced one) on laptop Dell Latitude D531 and has encountered a problem: I've often got my laptop slowed down very much and the message appears in a console: Disabling IRQ #19

I've searched for the solution, but failed finding the answer.

dmesg showed:

This tutorial shows how you can set up a Linux Mint 10 (Julia) desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

I used a USB stick method. In order to do this, it is first necessary to change the boot order in BIOS:
0. Plug in USB stick
1. F2 to get in BIOS
2. I left the "Booting order" settings in tact (HD first), but changed (after plugging in the
bootable USB stick) the Hard drives booting scheme so that my USB stick comes first
Now the BIOS is ready to boot the USB disk with Debian Squeeze on it.

Instead of just the ordinary netinst image, I placed the entire first squeeze CD on the usb stick using the information in: http://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/i386/ch04s03.html.en
In short:
0. With gparted (for example) rewrote the partition table of my USB disk so that /dev/sd?1 is

If you want to change speed and duplex of your network card you have to use ethtool or mii-tool.ethtool can be used to query and change settings such as speed, auto- negotiation and checksum offload on many network devices, especially Ethernet devices.

Debian 6.0 "Squeeze": Call for Upgrade and Installation tests

The Debian project is proud to announce, that its upcoming release Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" has entered the final phase of its development cycle and is nearly in its final form. We now seek the help of our users to find the remaining bugs related to upgrades from the previous stable release as well as bugs related to the installation of fresh systems.

If you plan to install a fresh Debian system in the near future, please consider installing Debian "Squeeze" with the debian-installer available at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ [1]. There is also a list of known errata [2] available, as well as a detailed installation manual [3]. As usual problems should be reported as an installation report [4].
