they are SEEN but won't read. and OF COURSE they are where I did MOST of my backup!

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
Error opening '/dev/sdd1': Permission denied
Failed to mount '/dev/sdd1': Permission denied
Please check '/dev/sdd1' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions,
and the mounting user ID. More explanation is provided at
http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#unprivileged

CAN yoU MOUnt it as ROOT?
What COMMAND do you use to MOUNT?

nope... using the GUI, and will try the command line later... hear them spin up but fails.
