Debian Announce------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debian announces first South American Security Mirror The Debian project is proud to announce the availability of the first official security.debian.org mirror in South America. security.debian.org carries all the security updates of the stable and oldstable releases. "In combination with the GeoDNS feature used by Debian, this should speed up downloads for our users in that geographical area drastically. This is a welcome improvement in the worldwide coverage of dedicated official security.debian.org mirrors, administrated by the Debian projecti" says Martin Zobel-Helas, member of the Debian System Administration team. "Debian has many users in South America and we are happy to help the Debian project with hardware and bandwidth to distribute locally content that was previously available only in the northern hemisphere" adds Carlos Carvalho of the C3SL. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" released February 6th, 2011 After 24 months of constant development, the Debian Project is proud to present its new stable version 6.0 (code name "Squeeze"). Debian 6.0 is a free operating system, coming for the first time in two flavours. Alongside Debian GNU/Linux, Debian GNU/kFreeBSD is introduced with this version as a "technology preview". Debian 6.0 includes the KDE Plasma Desktop and Applications, the GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments as well as all kinds of server applications. It also features compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.2 of the LSB. Debian runs on computers ranging from palmtops and handheld systems to supercomputers, and on nearly everything in between. A total of nine architectures are supported by Debian GNU/Linux: 32-bit PC / Intel IA-32 (i386), 64-bit PC / Intel EM64T / x86-64 (amd64), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Sun/Oracle SPARC (sparc), MIPS (mips (big-endian) and mipsel (little-endian)), Intel Itanium (ia64), IBM S/390 (s390), and ARM EABI (armel). [Ed. note: Otavio Salvador posted this into the debian-devel-announce mailing list today: ] The Debian Installer team[1] is pleased to announce the second release candidate of the installer for Debian Squeeze. = Improvements in this release of the installer = * Keyboard configuration for the graphical installer fixed for several languages; ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Updated Debian GNU/Linux: 5.0.8 released The Debian project is pleased to announce the eighth update of its stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (codename "lenny"). This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustment to serious problems. Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away 5.0 CDs or DVDs but only to update via an up-to-date Debian mirror after an installation, to cause any out of date packages to be updated. Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are included in this update. New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular installation media accompanied with the package archive respectively will be available soon at the regular locations. [Ed. note: A message from Otavio Salvador posted in the debian-devel-announce mailing list. If you're interested in software and want to ensure Debian runs on your hardware, it's more than worthwhile to try a test install and give some feedback if you have problems.] The Debian Installer team[1] is pleased to announce the second beta release of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux Squeeze. This release is dedicated to Frans Pop, who worked as Debian Installer Release Manager for several years. Even after he stepped out from this responsibility in 2007, Frans continued to be heavily involved in several aspects of D-I until he passed away. |
